BIO:

Charles Ivan Punchatz has been composer-in-residence for the Carlsbad Music Festival (2009), the winner of the iO String Quartet’s Composition Competition (2007), a Finalist in the ASCAP Foundation’s Morton Gould Young Composers’ Awards (2008), and his work has been featured in Talujon Percussion Quartet’s Percussion Discussion III (2007), a concert series designed to give audience members the opportunity to interact with many of the composers featured on the program.  He has written for a variety of ensembles and instruments, ranging from standard ensembles such as string quartet and chamber orchestra, to the unorthodox, such as tuba and timpani quartets as well as  musical saw and prepared piano.  He has also written for electronics, as well as music for film.  He is also a performer of improvisatory music, collaborating with composer/performer Sean Harold on several different projects, as well as performing on the original Harry Partch instruments as part of the Montclair State University's Harry Partch Ensemble.


He has received an M.A. in Music Theory and Composition from the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University where he studied composition with Ting Ho and Dean Drummond, and received a B.M. in Music Theory and Composition from the Purchase College Conservatory of Music (SUNY) where he studied with composers Suzanne Farrin, Du Yun, Huang Ruo, and Joel Thome.
